Food Habituation Helps You Feel Calm Around Food. Here Are 4 Other Benefits.

Ever avoid buying certain foods because you're afraid you'll eat the entire thing? Believe me, I GET IT. 

For most of my life, I'd stick with “safe foods” at home because I knew the likelihood of binging on whatever was in the pantry was pretty high (this is of course unless I was intentionally binging- then all bets were off).

One of the most empowering parts of becoming an Intuitive Eater has been getting to a place where food is neutral...

How is that even possible?

Food Habituation. This is an Intuitive Eating practice of gently exposing yourself to “fear foods” so that the novelty wears off.

This takes time, but when you fully commit to food habitation so many incredible things happen

  • Deeper self-trust. You no longer struggle with the fear of not being able to stop eating something.

  • Mental peace. You feel safe having a wider variety of foods in the kitchen, without feeling constantly preoccupied with the inventory.

  • Joy at meals. You’re able to experience authentic pleasure + satisfaction at meals, instead of worrying about becoming uncomfortable full. Or eating in secrecy after.

  • Food authenticity. You’re able to identify the foods you truly enjoy eating- you might even discover you don’t actually LIKE some foods you crave the most.

Going through the food habituation process when becoming an Intuitive Eater not only rebuilds body trust- it EMPOWERS your relationship with food.

If you can’t trust yourself around certain foods, you are certainly not alone. But this is also a clear indicator you need this work. 

Wherever you fall on the spectrum of your relationship with food, the truth is if we can’t trust ourselves around certain items we need to heal our relationship with food + our body to some degree (alright, time for a big breath and a bigger dose of self-compassion my love, this realization can feel uncomfortable).
