The REAL Reason You Can’t Put Down The Peanut Butter
Peanut butter bingeing is something that I struggled with for years…can you relate?
Numbing out on spoonfuls, shamefully burying empty cartons in the trash & sneaking out to replenish.
Negotiating with myself & planning which meals I’d restrict or how much I’d work out to compensate.
Not being able to poop for DAYS.
YEAH. I’ve been through it all. And I felt physically, mentally & emotionally exhausted.
I also didn’t know WHY I wasn’t able to stop eating the damn thing or HOW to break the cycle.
Diet culture teaches us that nut butter is everything from “safe”, “good”, “healthy”, a low-carb darling, a “treat”, something to eat in moderation…
Talk about confusing. AND IT TASTES REALLY DAMN GOOD.
I'll shoot it to you straight because I wish someone had illuminated this when I was struggling…
When you start healing your relationship with food you’ll most likely realize a combination of the following things:
You’re restricting (mentally, emotionally, physically)
You’re not eating enough throughout the day
The variety of foods that you give yourself permission to eat is limited
You’re probably not clear on how to meet your emotional needs consistently
(Before we go in any further- take a big breath. This is not your fault. The struggle that I'm speaking about is not a reflection on you, your intelligence, moral character, or anything remotely related. This is a direct result of the diet culture that we're all living in. Self-compassion is essential for healing and this is a fantastic time to exercise that skill.)
Truth be told, my struggle was never actually about peanut butter. And neither is yours.
Healing our relationship with food is complex- it’s layered & very rarely just about the food.
If making peace with nut butter (or any other food) feels like an impossible task, I’m here to tell you it’s possible- As we speak, there are 3 containers chilling out in our pantry that I use as I please without shame, guilt or chaos!!
Healing your relationship with food is fully possible for you, but you have to be willing to take the first step.
