The Body “A-Ha!” You Might Need Right Now: Our Thoughts Impact Our Feelings
If you've ever had a panic-y feeling around your hunger cues, you are not alone. But that doesn't mean this reaction has to be your reality.
Let me give a real-life analogy to help explain a possible solution to this type of anxiety
Every time I'm in traffic or in the window seat of an airplane my pee anxiety goes through. the. roof.
I'm not kidding- there have been times when I've pulled down my pants in the car because I'm sweating so much or stuck my head out the window in a fit of panic.
This panic is a 0-10 escalation as soon as I feel the casual “freedom” of urinating at my leisure taken away.
Here's the truth though: I actually don't have to physically pee any more than I did prior to seeing the brake lights or that stranger settling into the aisle seat.
My mind has created an instant story that “there is NO bathroom available” “you will wet your pants” and “you're locked in and out of control”…manifesting a physical FEELING.
My pee example can be applied to SO MANY THINGS IN LIFE.
The one that surfaces the most with my clients is anxious hunger- The instant desire to eat OR polish off the plate because your mind is recovering from deprivation (diets/restriction).
This reaction often feels SUPER uncomfortable physically, mentally & emotionally.
But here's the remedy: shifting your thoughts from “there's no more food” to “there's plenty of food”/“food is coming”/“we can eat as soon as we want again”.
And putting these new nurturing thoughts into practice to SHOW your body that what you're thinking is true.
Whether it's your bladder, food, a work project, sleep, or something else- this practice of examining + shifting your thoughts is essential for nurturing your relationship with YOU.
I hope that this lands in your life at a time that you need to receive it. Here's to a mindful + memorable week ahead!
