Episode 78: WHY The Modern Girl Podcast Is Changing to Body Truth (Solo Episode)

In this episode we sit down with....your host, Katelyn Parsons.

Katelyn Parsons is a Certified Intuitive Eating + Body Image Coach, Speaker, and host of the weekly podcast, Body Truth.

After years of struggling with bulimia and disordered eating, she not only found recovery but recognized a crucial missing link in the wellness industry- empowerment + individual sustainability around health. This inspired her entrepreneurial journey and life mission to shift the conversation toward healing our relationship with food and body.

For the past 4 years, Katelyn has helped countless creative leaders transform their relationship with food and body image through an integrative, evidence-based process so that they can move through each day feeling more present, empowered, and comfortable in their skin, without worrying about what to eat.

You’ll also find Katelyn snuggled up with her cat or strolling the beach in sunny San Diego with her husband and their pup Winnie.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • The why behind the changes we have made with our podcast

  • What to expect as you stay with this community

  • Our mission of embracing and embodying who you are and creating a safe space to feel seen and heard

  • How grateful I am for YOU- the ultimate reason behind these powerful episodes

Episode 78: WHY The Modern Girl Podcast Is Changing To Body Truth (solo episode)

Katelyn:

Hello! Hi friend-  welcome. I’m so glad to be with you today. And it is just you and me in this episode. And you may have noticed when you clicked on the show today, the title was different. The show graphic was different, possibly assuming that the graphic was uploaded by the time this is being released. But I wanted to hop on and record a mini-episode to just explain what’s going on in our little community.

So as of today, this podcast is going to be known as Body Truth. So we are graduating from The Modern Girl Podcast into this beautiful new space and we chose a name that we could grow with. So I really wanted to just explain why we're making some of these changes. And also give you an idea of what you can expect as you stay with this community.

And for everybody who has been a part of it since the beginning, this is just such an amazing moment, like just seeing this, seeing the show almost hit 80 episodes. And that is because of you and your dedication to listening and all of the amazing guests that we have on the show- just incredible women that have exceeded my expectations above and beyond.

And I am just so excited about where we're headed. The mission that we have to reach more humans who are ready to ditch diet culture, heal their relationship with food, and their bodies. And really just create a safe, brave space for everybody listening, so that you can go out and do the work and also be comfortable with just being as you are. And that is such a foundational message that I want to emphasize going into this next chapter, in this podcast.

If you're new, I want you to know that this podcast is not about “fixing”. You are perfect exactly as you are. This podcast is about embracing and embodying who you are and creating a safe space to feel seen and heard and accepted by way of these incredible stories that we get to hear every single week from women who are courageous enough to share, and the expertise that they bring to the conversation as well, too.

So I want to invite you to continue hanging out with us and also to invite anybody that you feel like this type of conversation would resonate with. We have some really exciting guests coming up. And I am just so honored to have these conversations every single week.

We are changing the intro and the outro. We’ll be changing the show music and you might have heard that coming into this episode, something that reflects and grounds the nature of the conversations that we're having. And we changed the name of the podcast!

So why did we do that? I would love to share with you. Because I almost didn't change this. But I want to give you a backstory to just be transparent where I've been in this process and to really bring you along into this journey with me and with all of the people that contribute to this podcast. Shayla is our community manager, Stephanie is our editor, as you know, and they are a huge part of this entire production. And not to mention the guests that we have.

So storytime when I released this podcast, it was very much in that “done is better than perfect”, “progress, not perfection” mentality- the mindset that I really emphasize. I really try to walk that talk and that's showing up right now, in this moment, which I’ll explain in just a minute.

But I was really trying to embrace that mindset. And I knew I wanted to start a podcast- I've been wanting to start a podcast for years for probably like 10 years. I've listened to podcasts for such a long time and when I was a kid I used to do radio shows in my bedroom all the time. I just love the art of storytelling. So it was a big goal of mine and just something that I really wanted to offer this community.

And when I, when I did decide to put this out, the name was relevant, the name really emphasized some of the the products that I was selling at the time in my business and the messaging and the just the content that I was creating at that time.

But after about four episodes, after I released the podcast, I started to cringe every time I said it. I'm just being honest, I did, I don't know if anybody else has felt that way when listening. But something just didn't feel right, something was off. And I also didn't want to make an impulsive decision to change the name right away, I wanted to make sure that we could just put our heads down, do the work, get this up and running, and then reassess as it grew.

And in the past six months, I've really thought about what that means, what that name meant, what The Modern Girl Podcast meant, and why I was so cringy over it. And, also, the real possibility that if I did, if I did decide to change the name, I would possibly cringe over the new name that I was changing it into. That happens all the time. You know, I've talked to a few people about this just in terms of renaming things, and I, I've sat with it a lot, you know. Target didn't just wake up one day and decide to rebrand, they've really stuck with their name. You know, Nordstrom’s the same way. So many of these amazing companies have evolved with their name, and I am sure there have been moments where their creators have thought,”I need something to change”, you know, “this doesn't feel right”. But they went with it.

And for me, I really had to take a step back. And by the way, there's so many companies who have changed their names and so many podcasts that have changed their name successfully. And, and it's really been aligned with the growth of their mission and their message. And I really feel like this community is more in that camp. And the reason why is because these, these conversations that we have, are about truth-telling. They are about embodiment. They are courageous and vulnerable, and deeply inspiring. And when I thought about what the name meant, The Modern Girl Podcast, I just didn't ever feel like it reflected that. I was bargaining in my mind thinking, “well, most of our stories start out when we are young girls. And so it's relevant”.  And so we get to evolve from that point.

But where we're heading with this podcast is even more bold and even more courageous. And I always want to make sure that it is from an inclusive space as well, too. And so the idea of not attaching this to a specific gender in the name, and also really, that vision of creating what we're stepping into, in the energy of these conversations, I just felt like it needed something that we could grow with that we were embodying as a community. So that's a bit of the backstory. And like I said it, it definitely came down to these past few weeks and really these last couple of months where I spoke a lot with our team and just sat with these reflections and where I really wanted to create a safe, brave space for everybody in this community.

And so we did make the decision. I made the decision. And I'm so grateful to have gotten the support in re-reshaping and redecorating this podcast and rebranding essentially. And I'm excited about where we're heading.

As of today, we will be offering transcriptions for all of the episodes so this is going to be a big undertaking. Going forward. Each episode will have the transcription available in the show notes. So on the episode web page, you can get the full text, it's not even a download, you can just go to the Show page and see everything there. And we're going to really create an interactive transcription for everybody too, so there will be hyperlinks for a lot of the things that we talked about. And just a way to make it really easy and interactive and accessible for everybody. And by the end of the year, our goal is to have all of the past episodes transcribed and up and running in the same fashion as well, too. So that is very important to us. And we hope that you enjoy that just moving forward. And also feel like you can share that with your communities as well too, or anybody else in your life that might be relevant for conversations.

We've got a lot of amazing experts in a broad range of industries coming on. So we will be continuing with body image stories as well as expert’s input on how to integrate these tools that the guests are sharing in each episode. So we'll continue with that. But the conversations and the industries that we're speaking to are going to be much more robust and diverse, and inclusive as well, too.

And I think that's it, I want to keep this short and sweet. There's probably more to say, and I'll be trickling this into the upcoming episode intros as well, too. But one last thing that I want to share, if you are not on the weekly email, that is a great place to stay up to date with all of the episodes and the guests and the and the topics that we have every single week, you can sign up on my website, it's www.katelynparsons.com or just click the show notes. And there's a link in the show notes as well too. This is a food and body image, weekly email. But if you are somebody who is trying to be on social media less, and wanting to be a little bit more in control of where you are spending your time and who you're interacting with, and you're also really craving more resources around body image tools and food and intuitive eating and mental health- this a one-stop-shop. Every Sunday, I send this out- every Sunday evening. So you can feel really nice and grounded moving into the week. I've been doing this for many years now, I think like three or four years at this point. And it's one of my favorite things to offer this community. So you'll find that in the show notes or just go to my website, katelynparsons.com and you'll find that there. And that's also a great tool as well if you are trying to clean up your feed wherever you listen to podcasts, and you've found recently that your storage is getting really clogged because you're subscribing to a lot of podcasts. If you want to just stay on top of the podcasts that we release every week without feeling like you have to subscribe. That's a great opportunity to just be plugged in and take a little bit more advantage of how you want to use that type of control on your own phone and your own time and your own energy.

I think that's it, I am really excited.

I'm also recording this in a closet. This morning, my husband switched closets with me. We have a guest bedroom and so he moved all of his stuff to that bedroom. And I took over his tinier closet in our bedroom. And I'm wedged between all of these clothes trying to get a better sound quality. And it's really funny, I wish you can see me right now. I’ll have to take a video for you next time or a photo.

But you are incredible. I just so appreciate you. And if you are feeling inspired to just raise this community up, even more, the best way that you can do that is by leaving us a rating and a review. And it doesn't have to be lengthy at all. And it really is just a beautiful way to boost engagement and also get these conversations out to more people. And when you do that, I always like to hold that vision that you are contributing to this message. By leaving a rating and review you are taking a bold step forward in raising the consciousness around how to get the message out around healing your relationship with food and your body and dismantle diet culture and really just taking care of yourself. That is an act of radical self-care and I absolutely appreciate it more than you know.

I love you. I would love to hear what you think too. So send me an email, you can just hit ‘reply’ to the weekly emails and let me know how you feel about these changes. If it's scaring you, if it feels good for you, if you're excited. If you're unclear about anything, just send us an email. That's the best way- you can also send me a DM on Instagram, I probably am not going to get back as quickly on that platform just because I'm spending a little bit more time off social media these days. But I welcome your feedback. I welcome your space in this community. And just so, so appreciative of you and where we're going. And I will see you next week. We have an amazing guest on the show. Actually. It's a duo, and I think you're gonna love them. So stay tuned, stay courageous and brave and safe and have fun this week. I'll talk to you later.
